I just want to start getting him used to one, because I read that it is easier for the baby later on to get rid of the bottle when the baby turns one.

You're right on track. Just get him one that you like. He probably won't want to hold it yet anyway. I don't like the soft spouts because my daughter chews them and gets the valve to come out then spills juice everywhere.

My daughter was started on sippy cups at that age. She got only juice in the sippy. She still got milk in her bottles. When she turned a year old she got only milk in the sippy and her juice with a lid and straw. The first years makes a good plastic cup with a lid and straw.

I used an AVENT brand sippy cup when I was training my kids. It is short, fat and has handles. The best feature is that it has a flat spout like a sippy cup but it is made of rubber so it is flexible. It gets them used to something other than nipples but also kind of works like a nipple. Good Luck!

Gerber makes one with handles on both sides, which makes it easier to hold. But I found when my daughter was about 6months(she is 11 months now) that the ones with out the no spill valve worked better, again I think Gerber makes these. It was easier for her to get the juice/water out than the ones with the valve. She now use the ones with the valve, now that she has figured out how to suck through the valve. You just have to try a little bit each day, and maybe try different cups. Baby will eventually get the hang of it.

Playtex makes a smaller sippy cup with the handles attached ot the lid. My daughter started out on this one. Gerber makes one like it, however the handles are on the cup and you cannot always get the lid to align so the spout is centered between the handles.

Playtex makes great products.

Find a sippy cup with a soft rubber spout to be gentle on his gums/teeth, (Gerber has great ones) and some with nice easy handles and a no drip lid. Of course he'll need some help, but he'll get the hang of it. It's so funny when they figure out that something comes out when they suck back...Good Luck !

I like the nuby sippy cups. They are still soft like a bottle. It is the only sippy my son would take. They are cheap less then $2.00 from walmart. You can find them in the baby section.

You should try one of those half bottle half sippy cups... The sippy cup with the nipple.
Gradually do it so he doesn't even know.
Best wishes...
And at 5 months you really shouldn't worry about that yet.
It's way to early, he or she is not even drinking whole milk yet!!!

They now have sippy cups with nipples. Then later, the same sippy cup can be used with other types of tops (normal sippy cup, straw attachment, etc)

It doesn't really matter what brand you buy, but I would suggest one with handles. It makes it easier for the child to hold. It just takes time and patience. Leave it accessible so you can try at different times during the day. At least with you holding it at first they can get used to the shape of the "spout" since it is different than a nipple.
