Because Houston is stupid( not the 49ers). Bush should have been first.

I feel Mario Williams got picked first, because the Texans didn't want a player that had a lot of turmoil around him as the face of their franchise. With Mario Williams, they were getting a player with no real history of any kind of turmoil. Bush had that house thing going on, and the Texans weren't sure how that would end up. Also, the Texans needed some serious help on defense at that position. Looking back, obviously it was a mistake. Bush is one of the most dynamic players in the NFL today, and it's as a rookie too, which is scary. He helps the Saints in an infinite amount of ways. He's a decoy on offense, and can make plays when the plays are handed to him. He stretches a 3 yard minimal gain into a 15 to 20 yard outburst. And given any daylight on returns, he's proved he can take it to the hizzie (house). Bush's economical value is much higher than William's today, so as a fan, and if I was an owner, I would rather have Bush by far. I'm glad however that Bush is in New Orleans, because the people of Katrina deserve a player like this in their area, so they have something to look up and forward to. I also find it somewhat Ironic with his house troubles, that he would wind up with the Saints, where all of the fans are having similar pains, so in a non-humorous way, the fans can relate to him on some level.

He got picked first because Houston needed a long term weapon on defense, and they got him. No, I wouldn't rather have Reggie Bush personally. I'm a Carolina fan and what we need is A.J. Hawk (Green Bay Linebacker pick no.5). But we got DeAngelo Williams, who set plenty of records in college...including two 2,000 all-purpose yard seasons....Still, that A.J. Hawk is amazing.

The Texans 'thought' they had good enough backs, and that they needed help on defense. So naturally they took the "best" available defensive player. It was an astronomical mistake and wether they admit it or not, they are sorry for passing him up.
And I love the first answer. Completly screws up the draft order while he claims other people have been living under a rock.

well, first of all. i would have not picked either. i know it sounds crazy but hear me out. what i would have done was trade that no. 1 pick to get some more picks so i can rebuild the offensive line, which is the worst i have ever see. i me for christ sake the like gave up 85 sacks in a season. so if they drafted bush, it would not have helped because their line sucks.

It depends on the franchise. Some teams might already have good enough running backs. Sometimes, teams want to rebuild in an area on their team - even if they aren't real good in other areas. I think it also depends on personality. I don't know who I would pick. I don't know either of them that well, if at all.
