Men are geared for sex, one way or another. In any exclusively male environment, some will turn to mutual masturbation or other sexual acts to provide relief. The army is careful to give their young men time to go into towns and have some R&R. This is why such a large crowd of prostitutes is found in just about any town where the army is.
Men in prisons don't have the same luxury of going to town, and monks aren't supposed to think about sex - in both instances there is some man-on-man activity to relieve tension.
Not all do it, but some will. This is generally an act against their natural orientation - they are not usually gay. (Being straight and being gay are both normal sexual orientations)

I think you are confusing the military with the prisons! My hubby was in the military and he never felt the need for homosexual intercourse just because of the lack of women! In fact he was so busy that they never really had time to even talk about sex!
No, I think that whatever happens within the confines of male-only areas is between the men themselves, not just due to the lack of female presence. Although yes, your argument does have validity. Men in prisons do abuse each other but it isn't necessarly due to lack of females, but rather as acts of violence, manipulation, and abuse. I think if the same happens in the military, it would be more due to gay men rather than frustrated abusive type, but you never know...

ummm... women do join the service! There is no lacking of females in the military! Have you been living under a rock?!
And trust me... plenty of people have affairs while they're deployed... w/ the opposite sex no less.

There is no 'lacking of girls' as you put it. My understanding is that this matter has largely been addressed with additives in the daily brew. There are some pockets of resistance in the navy, but who cares about a few poufs on a boat.

it is not unusual in an all male environment for some sort of homosexual behaviour to take place between hetrosexuals, often it is just mutual w*nking for "a laugh"
