That depends.

I live in the South, and (of course there are exceptions to every rule) I tend to find that people here are still rather polite and respectful.

NOW: This is not meant to sound bad, but I have been up North and well......most of those people were pretty rude or would be considered rude in the South.

Here we still say please, thank you and excuse me. We call women Ma'am and Men Sir. We (not all of us mind you) were brought up that way.

Now as far as being to the letter manners.......like thank you cards after parties and using the correct olive fork.we don't always do that.

I believe that some people lack manners and some have very nice manners. Unfortunatly, more and more people seem to be of the manner lacking variety.

Yes, I believe people lack manner's. And I wish that their parent's and school teacher's would teach them manner's, like they use to.

ALL of them? No.

I have been reading Miss Manners (both books and columns) for decades now, and I am beginning to think she has been having some effect.

I see more and more questions posed to her complaining about people who are actually following her precepts.

(One was complaining about "people saying things they don't really mean" -- referring to common polite things. Kinda funny, actually. Miss Manners told the person to please not discourage this.)

Given how many readers she has, and how long she's been at it (say you started reading her 20 years ago, when you also started having kids), this seems plausible to me.

Not that I think this is all that's going on, or it's solely due to her. There are also cycles to such things, or perhaps pendulum swings.

Also, what constitutes proper manners varies from place to place, culture to culture. (We were raised to bring something when we went to a friend's for dinner, but in some cultures that's insulting, as one example.)

Of course, having examples of what you have in mind would have been helpful.

I experience that people do lack manners. Usually in regard to common courtesy, Today in our multi-ethnic society it is often the case that we judge others to be lacking in manners when in reality they were taught differently.

Hell, yes! People ain't got no friggin manners no more. They might as well go flick themselves, assole morons! People should just be punched in the face to teach 'em some real manners. That's what I believe!

Some do. Mostly I object to the lack of civility in the world and the air of entitlement that many people seem to have.

Absolutely. Its a sad statement as to what our society has become. Families don't sit down for meals together anymore. Thus, elbows on the table, chewing with your mouth open & talking with food in your mouth. I tried to raise my children the way my parents raised me. They in turn are raising my grandkids the same. Pretty much respect is a thing of the past. We have no one to blame but ourselves. How sad.
