you have to transfer the mp3s to itunes, then plug your ipod into the comp and it will update automatically.

Itune would be the apple way to load the Ipod, however, you can also use others such as jutebox or the likes, just insert your Ipod and move the songs to the portable device.
I don't like Itune because once you move your music there you can't move it back for something else.
