Sounds like it. If you want to cash it, ask your bank to notify you when it clears.

DON'T SEND OUT ANY MONEY UNTIL IT DOES CLEAR!!!

There's a common scam going around where the criminal sends out a large check, and asks the recipient to send back a check for a smaller amount, right away. Guess what - the big check bounces, and you're stuck for the amount you mailed them.

I can't believe they actually mailed the check. I would try to see if the funds are available on the check, and if so, just cash the check. The sender is trying to get personal information about you to steal your bank account I would guess. They probably have all they need except your social security number or bank routing numbers, or they may already have these, and you need to close the account and reopen another one that they can't steal from.

YES -- it IS. If you do what they say, the will stop payment on the check and you will be OUT the cash you spent on the Western Union purchase.

After all, did you even ENTER the lottery? If it seems to be too good to be true, it is!

Check SNOPES for info below.

i haven't heard of it but pretty much ANY TIME someone you don't know asks you to send them money, it's a scam.

i dont get it though, if they mailed you a check of 2954.43 and they ask you to deposit it, why dont you just keep the 2954.43 once it clears? does it even clear? why even do the western union thing?

i think i should ask this question too, lol

yeah, that sounds sketchy.... at the bank yesterday I saw a sign about scams--it said if you've been told you won a foreign lottery but need to send money somewhere, it is a scam. Don't do it!
