England has no sense of national identity and therefore cannot summon up a fighting spirit. Mancs hate Scousers, everybody hates Londoners and so on.
You don't know who you are so how can you expect to gel as a team?

Pandora - it's Boudicca, 'Boadicea' is for the uneducated.
She lost to the Romans, we didn't.
Oh and to the other effing Nigel, Culloden was not a Scots-English battle, unlike Bannockburn.
You don't have the ammunition to even wound me.
Up yours Nigel!

True. But the Scots hate the English. Why. The English play better football.

Yeah but the french hate each other The South and The North - But they won a world cup, Euro Champs and got into the finals this year.

I played football in a cup match there and one of the players was sent off for suggesting that the referee came from the South after he'd made a bad decision.

It has to come down more to playing as a team of individuals who cant be bothered...

I'd disagree that England lacks a national identity. We've always had our regional rivalries but there is definite pride in the flag.

For me, the problem is that the players are treated like stars already, despite having never won anything. With that in mind, they don't have that extra edge of having to prove themselves.

I think that's probably the main reason Beckham has been dropped, not because he isn't good enough, or even because he doesn't put in effort (Beckham has, for all his faults always shown pride in wearing an England shirt and worked hard), but because he attracts so much media attention, contributing to the "superstars" effect.

Just my interpretation of what's going on.

Actually, I think it's just that the players aren't good enough. Crouch is not a world class striker, and a half fit Rooney is no use on his own, particularly with a hapless midfield, who were sorely missing Gerrard and Beckham last night. They wouldn't have scored if they'd played all night against Croatia.

Just a guess Jock, but are you Scottish? Great result against France, but national pride and fighting spirit alone don't get you qualified for European Championships and World Cups.

England does have an idenity...its just not popular at the moment...celtic studies and interest in the Scots and the Irish and Welsh has reappeared.

But its not as simple as that the famous ICENI who burnt down London came from modern day Norfolk, so England does have celtic roots.

England is a melting pot of immrgants from 1 century to the present day, who have shaped the country for what it is. That is something to be proud of. Not having an idenity can be positive.

I felt so welcome and part of the community when I lived in England - there was a no 'them and us' situation. Like you get north of the border.

This is comming from a scot. (who supports Norwich City)

I think your right Jock,England just dont seem to have that fighting spirit or bottle especially when it comes to playing really big teams like France for instance, you just know that if England were to play France they would bottle it,Scotland on the other hand beat France with a team that has loads of fighting spirit and BOTTLE.

Never thought of it like that. I think a massive, country-wide party of acceptance and love should solve that little problem. I'll start the ball rolling by opening a can of Stella and sharing it with that scouse tramp next door.

Or we could have 'hug a scouse' day? Nah, nobody would go for that. Stick to the party suggestion.

It's never cost France. North hates south. Bretons hate everyone. Everyone hates Paris. The country has deep racial and ethnic divisions. Doesn't seemingly bode well in creating a national identity, yet they have won a World Cup and two European Championships...and each time they do, people of all ethnicities and regional identities pour out onto the streets in celebration.

We have almost as much national guilt as the Germans, but they seem to function as a nation, so maybe it's the divide and rule tactics used on us by many years of sponging monarchs and useless upper classes.

The English team are more like commodities, advertising this and that and their wag lifestyles instead of concentrating on football
