someone told me that they have software that can hack into any computer through the webcam. this worries me because i have a young child who uses the internet and chats to his school friends via the webcam. is this possible and if so, then what do i do to stop it?

It certainly is possible, but most likely improbable. Your IP address is public so when you are chatting with someone they could, if they knew what they were doing, get your IP address. And if they really knew what they were doing they could see what vulnerabilities you have left open on your PC and gain access.
What you can do is to get a firewall. Most routers have one built in. Make sure you get all the Microsoft Updates. And lastly only chat with people you know and not people don't.

when ever you view a webcam or let someone view your webcam you open a pc port they cant get into your pc from the open port not only that a hacker can im you if your im is open and not close off they can hack you that way & also by email they can send you email
