worms breathe through their skin, so when it rains, it actually fills the soil with water. when the worm has too much water on it's skin, it wont be able to breathe well, so it will come up to the surface to be able to breathe. they really like sitting on sidewalks and driveways, but when it stops raining, if they dont go back into the soil, they will dehydrate just as quickly. thats why after a rain, youll see a lot of dried worms on the sidewalk.

The vibrations of the rain drops, in the soil "annoy" the worms causing them to come to the surface. Some end up on the sidewalk, and when the rain drys they can't get back to the dirt before drying up.

Yes, sometimes at least. During the spring, they mostly do. Probably 'cause the ground gets "flooded" with rainwater, and they need to escape for a little bit.
