Hello, I have a problem and I need your help. I haven't been feeling well lately and I have an appointment with my doctor tomorrow. The problem is that on Tuesday I went home sick from work and called in yesterday. I still feel ill but I really need the money, but I work with food and could be contagios. So should I risk getting in trouble with my boss by calling in, or should I take a chance and try to work? I know that my doctor will give me a note for work, but I still need the money, but I don't want to spread my germs. So what should I do? Please help.

I'm an Business Ethics instructor. I actually "am" home sick too. Ha ha...funny huh~ So here is the "right" thing to do.

If you have a "Fever" you are contagious. Depending on if it is a virus or bacteria infection it will run 24-72 hours. If the illness contains vomitting or diarahha that is still contagious for until the system is normal. You are looking at now 5-7 day window of time.

As long as your job is not a jeoprdy then take this time to rest and get better. [work doubles in a week or so] Immediately see the doctor and DO get a "return to work" note for your job and make sure to cover the two days OUT all ready and the rest of the week...just to be safe. [keep a copy for yourself in a file]

So this will cover you from being fired unfairly. Since you "in good faith" held up the standards of the health code and high profermance of the work ethic of the job and yourself.

Be honest and quiet....being hyper-shows your scared or lying!
Practice what you are going to say before you call. IT comes our clear and concise. The boss, doesnt' want waste time on problems. So make it easy. Call your boss at a slowtime between shifts and explain that you are Very sick and contagious. You will be at home (call from home) for the next two-three days. I do have medicine and a doctors note. As soon as the condition allows me ~I will be rushing back to work-Dude I need the money.

[Prior to calling the bossl] call up a buddy that might be able to cover those shifts and offer to pickup few extras for them next weekend-tell them that you plan to tell the boss that..super thanks.

Then tell your boss exactly per shift- that you found coverage for your shift-Name them. Your Boss needs coverage- yes they may be concerned about you- but work comes first.

That is the most ethical and responsible thing to do.

The job and money issues- It may hurt the budget, yet next week, pickup the extra hours and make it up.

In the future [make a sick day fund] about $200 is the average loss wages for an "cold", add money for medicine, wellness supplies (gatoraide, crackers, soup) and doctor appt, you need to add another $100 +.... I put mine in CASH in a envelope in my dresser drawer, so that will cover the bills then and if I have to go to the emergancy room, it will pay for the deductable. Also If a friend runs the errand for me for the groceries or even a hot meal, I have cash to pay them...it does matter a lot.

too fast & too much text for spell check.
Best wishes!! Get some rest.

Its very understandable that need the money...
and i think it would be okay to go into work as long as
you wash your hands before you start cooking or whatever you do
also if you feel you have to sneeze or cough step away from the food area and re wash you hands with disinfectant soap and also make sure you wash the faucet handle while washing your hands becuase if you don't and you turn the faucet back off the germs from your hands will go back on your hands and it will be like you never washed your hands at all.
and don't put your hands anywhere near your face espically around your nose and mouth...

im sure it would be okay to risk it but then again i don't really know how sick you are or what kind of cold you have so when you go to your doctor just make sure you take your medicine and you will be better soon!!! Best of luck.

You should stay home. If you go to work you run the risk of getting a lot of people sick, including your co-workers. If that happens a lot of people could be calling out in the future, most likely after you are feeling better and you would have to pick up the slack. You also run the risk of keeping yourself sick. If you stay home and rest you will most likely get better sooner. Your health is more important than money.

Go in to work, go up to your boss and tell him that you got ready, came in, but now you feel even more lousy and really need to go home and you don't want to get anyone else sick too. Your boss will see that you made the effort to come in, but if you look sick, he's not going to want you there. I've done this before and it works everytime.

I would take the time to recuperate, but if you feel like you could put in some time then go and work until you cant any more........at least that will show your boss you made the attempt to come in and wouldnt slash your pay check too much........... hope you feel better

If you go back to work you might just not get better and then at a certain time you would be forced to stay at home.

So I sugest you go to the docter and miss work a few days and get better.

All the best of luck

Well, in all reality one more day won't make that much difference to your money situation. I say don't pass on your illness. What if an infant recieve said poisinous gift? Then how would you feel? Hmm?

Talk to your boss and ask what his opinion is. Tell your boss your concerns and then let your boss make the decision whether or not you should stay home or not.

I think that you should call in again and get "well enough" as soon as possible.
