A hard drive is non-volatile memory that is slow but large. A computer starts by taking Operating System information from the hard drive and placing it in the kernel for fast access.
The hard drive allows you to store a lot of information (programs, processes and other) permanently even when power is off. Then when you start up your sytem (power on) needed files are sent to CPU registers, cache and RAM for faster ability while you are using programs. Upon saving data is recorded to hard drive permanently, without save-when power goes off changes and data are lost if not saved to hard disk.

A hard drive stores volatile (can be changed at will and will persist over time) and large amounts of programs and data that your computer uses.. It can be used as virtual memory when physical memory is not sufficent.
Hard drives are the cheapest per byte of information saved of all the media that is available (CD/DVDROM/FLASH memory/ physical memory)

To store the information on your computer when it is off. It will not erase (without being told to), and you cannot run a computer without it.
An external hard-drive is just for transporting immense amounts of data between two computers.

maximum drives the two comprise a setup cd or on the mfg internet site supply a setup acquire. because it fairly is a 'storage' tension the xp cd should not be required in any respect. OBTW Xp previous to sp 2 did no longer help sata. So a floppy disk tension and sata motive force have been required to setup xp on that tension. solid success

To store excess data on your computer that you internal HD may not be able to hold. Just extra space, although some people, like me, use it as a portable if I am going to an office w/o a server connection.
