No everyone gains that much but it does happen. The average is 2 to 3 pounds. It is all water retention. Our bodies will retain water during our cycle and yes we will flush it out back out when the period is over. Taking Midol helps to prevent a lot of water retention. The swelling in your stomach is usually referred to as bloating, also caused from water retention. But generally a woman's weight can fluctuate 3 to 5 lbs. a day regardless of whether or not it's her time of the month.

Since each woman's body is different, I'm sure there's not an exact number like 5 pounds that applies to every woman. However, some women do gain weight during their period (and then lose it afterwards). You're not gaining actual fat, though: usually it's due to bloating because you're retaining water. So that extra weight and your stomach swelling is actually water, which can be heavier than you think! It makes sense, when you think about it: your body is losing liquids through your menstrual blood, so it retains water in order to avoid dehydration. This is also why your pants/skirts may get tighter during your period. Don't worry! After your period, your body will flush out that water, and your weight will go back to normal.

There are things you can do to avoid bloating during your period: the easiest is to drink extra fluids so that your body doesn't feel in danger of dehydration. If you're sure to replace the fluids your body is losing, then you won't retain water, and your stomach won't swell. There are also OTC meds that treat the symptoms like cramps and bloating that women may have during your period (I'm sorry--their names are slipping my mind right now!). I've never tried them, but many women use them, so you could give them a try. Getting on birth control helps other PMS-types of symptoms, so it might help the bloating too. But the easiest thing is just to drink extra fluids--water, gatorade, etc. Avoid caffeinated drinks like coke or coffee, which actually dehydrate you.

My breasts get tender and swell some during my period, too. That's not water retention, so drinking extra water won't help there. Getting on birth control has helped reduce the tenderness for me, and I usually just make sure to wear one of my more supportive bras during my period.

Hope that helps! Talk to your ob/gyn or doc if it keeps bothering you: no need to worry when there's people who can answer your questions!

First of all, you do not gain and lose weight in the form of "fat" when you are beginning and ending a period. What can happen and usually does in most women is that you retain water. Its more of a fluid build up that you release in the form of a period. So don't worry...you aren't gaining fat!!

Kind of. Your body retains water that can cause you to gain weight. That is all.
