Fortunately for me, I live in a large city in Orange County California so there is not much need to heat my house. If I do, I have a gas forced air heating system. Some times in the winter months I just turn on the heat to warm up the air. Usually about 10 minutes.

I live in Long Beach, in a condo by the ocean. I love my Central air conditioning during the summer, but hate the heating during the winter. I hate to be hot. But on those nights that are a little too cold and an extra blanket or two just don't do the trick, I just plug in an area heater, and set it on timer to go on and off during the night. It does the trick and is way cheaper than using the central heat.

There's ducked heating, which uses tin ducked pipes. There is pipe heating, a furnace heats water to hot water or steam which runs through pipes through radiators. Finally there is electric heating. Electric heating uses electricity that power electric elements that look like radiators. All types of heating is used in all houses of all sizes. However in rural places solar heating uses the sun warm pipes, works too. Also in green houses simple uses of glass housing traps heat from the sun and is used as heat.

I live by the beach, but it does get cold at night. I usually use the heater in the mornings, and keep the windows closed to keep heat in. At night I leave the heater off to conserve energy, and pile on the blankets as needed. Its a single level home.

I live in NYC we have steam heat provided by the building (for free) the only downside is that it becomes tropical in the apartment in the winter- you walk in from it being below zero and immediately start stripping... well i suppose its probably a good show for the people in the park across the street who can see into my apartment!
