Half day, if you're doing this mathematically. Presumably that's not the intended answer and I'm making a fool of myself, though...

A trick question! You can't have half a hole. A hole is an empty absence, you can't have half an empty absence (although something can be half empty) because it's an all-or-nothing type thing: the definition of a hole contradicts the idea of having half a hole.

That said, let's say you consider a pit 10 feet deep to be a hole, and 5 feet deep to be half a hole. This makes 15 feet per day (let's say a day is 24 hours), which means it takes 8 hours to dig half a hole (at a rate of 1.6 hours per foot). Although both pits are technically holes, you've substituted the words "smaller" or "larger" (which would accurately describe the holes) for the trickier terms "half" or "whole".

So it really depends on how you define a hole, although by the traditional definition, you've asked a riddly question indeed!

A hole is a hole, no matter the size. You can't dig 1 1/2 holes, nor can you dig 1/2 hole.

You can never dig half a hole. Any ammount you dig will always be a hole.
