I am thinking of investing in a basic sat-nav model (no more than £200) as will soon be starting a job that requires me to travel to new places everyday. And I am hopeless with maps! Is it worth investing in one? What models do you recommend? How do you power them up - do they need to be installed/attached to anything in the car or do you just stick them on the screen?

I was a cynic, but the new ones are well worth it. I would recommend the Tom tom go - you can charge it from a mains socket or the lighter socket of the car, and it sticks to your windscreen with a limpet like suction pad - which works very well. You can choose from various voices to guide you - and the map also plays in the background at the same time - and there is a night mode so you don't get dazzled. Go for it! (In 200 -yards- turn-right!". The new models are much better than the old ones - and include speed camera locations. Good luck!

Personally, I would prefer to use a good quality road atlas, as this gives you a bigger picture. Admittedly it does not tell you where to turn and you have to be comfortable with a map and understand the road layout.
I was out with someone one day who had one, it sent us the long way round to our destination to start with,(but the shorter route coming back)?, then when we couldn't turn right down a road we wanted, (because of roadworks), we had to travel about 3mile before it calculated a new route, whereas with a map, we would have been able to see it a lot clearer.
As you are not happy with maps, goto Halfords and discuss it with them, and buy the best you can for your money, and haggle! They do knock money off if pushed.

i think they are completely worth it, until i had used one i just thought whats the point but if your travelling alone to a big city or through a big city then theres nothing better than a speaking map telling you where to go and very easy to use just type in the post code and off you go, make a wrong turn and it re-routes you to your destination.

i would recomend any tomtom, navman or garmin! they are all brilliant devices they stick on your window or dash and can be taken with you if needed and are powered by in car chargers that plug in your lighter

look on ebay and you will pick up a great one for cheap prices! around £100

Definately worth it! I travel around the country for my job, and I paid £249 for a Tom Tom One. I think it's down to £199 now. You can download all the speed camera locations for around £30, and if that saves you just being flashed once, it's fully worth it! It's so user friendly, I'd invest any day! Goodluck!

The RAC and the AA and Maporama do good local maps on the web and also provide instructions as to how to get from A to B.
All free.

i think you plug it into the cig lighter. my mate's dad's got one and we used it to get to leeds from sheffield. you program them from a computer, although that could be just that model (which, i'm sorry, i couldn't tell you what model it is). but they are fun and they talk to you. however, if you make an error, even a deliberate one when you know a short cut that it doesn't, it wont shut up, so you may get annoyed quickly with it. but on the up side, they impress your friends, so there you are, get one. just remember to take it out with you when you get out the car.

Hi, I want one too. I think it's worth it But U must look after it as it gets easily stolen & cars broken into. Tom Tom are good.

I have used a car with it fitted & was very useful when travelling outside the area I knew.

So if you are travelling alot I would get one.

To choose which one go to Halfords and ask their advice & see if they will demonstrate them.
