I was wondering if a diesels glow plugs have anything at all to do with the ignition sequence or are they just for degelinizing fuel.

The answer is no. Glow plugs are nothing more than a starting aid. Just like Either or an intake heater. Glow plugs are used just before and during starting. They heat up the combustion chamber to aid in starting only. When you compress air it gets hot. Try touching the output line on the pressure side of an air compressor. When the piston goes up, it compresses the air which gets hot, just when it is at the top of the stroke is when the air is the hottest, that is when the fuel is injected causing the combustion. A glow plug aids in getting the initial air hot due to the engine block and cylinder etc. being cold.

diesel engines run only on the pistons compressing the air fuel mix and the heat generated by the compression to ignite the mix. glow plugs only preheat the cylinders aiding in initial firing. they don't degel fuel.

diesel ignition begins in the pre-ignition chamber at the glow plug ,a small amount of air and fuel is ignited ,then this in turn ignites the larger fuel/air mixture in the combustion chamber( this is what causes the" pre-ignition" rattle sound that is characteristic of deisel engines)
