There are different kinds of hernias depending on where and how they present. If you are talking about abdominal hernia, its usually the abdominal contents that protrude out through the weak areas in the abdominal wall.

Usually hernias become more prominent or visible when standing and disapper in laying down position. Some can be reduced or made to disappear by gently pushing them in. That sure is a clear indication of hernia, and it can gradually increase in size as the wall gets weaker or abdominal pressure increases.

If suspecious... should be definately brought to the doctors attention.

a testicular hernia is a bulge of intestines appearing in the scrotum. you can see it feel it and especially htings feel funny when lifting or bending. The other type is a tear in the smooth muscle of the stomach. a bulge may appaer and its very painful. this second form is more dangerous and harder to live with. I have a teste hernia, and it bothers me none after 15 years. very common.

It really depends on where you think you may have one. If it is in the stomache area usually there is pain and numbness over the area best bet is to see a dr. and find out they only get worse over time especially if you have to lift alot Good Luck
