I disagree. For starters, I don't think No Doubt's version is better than the original. I find Talk Talk's vocalist a much better fit for the songs desperation and angst. Gwen Stefani has never been an exceptional vocalist, and her voice sounds particularly thin and lazy on that track.
As for a cover being better than the original, how about Jimi Hendrix's version of Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower"? Don't get me wrong -- I love Bob. But Jimi took that song and made it his own in a way very few other musical artists have over the years.
There's some discussion for ya, cha cha.

Bollocks. It's appalling! Talk Talk (certainly Mark Hollis) were one of the most meticulous recording acts. I have heard that they would measure the air pressure in the recording studio and keep it the same to achieve consistency in their drum sounds. I have no doubt No Doubt afforded their 'cover version' no such care.
I would say that Sinead O'Connors cover of Nothing Compares To You stands higher on the list of better-than-the-original songs.

That would depend on who you thougth did the original for instance most people think that 'I fought the law' was originaly done by The Clash so would say yep thats the best version, but it was originaly done by Buddy Holly so if you new that you may say that. Normaly the first version I hear of a song is the best with the exception of Tainted Love. The original by Gloria Jones was **** then Soft Cells version was great until Manson did his verson which I know favour! Who can say all we can do is listen and enjoy! lol

No.
Certainly a lot of Dylan's early songs were done better by others ("All Along the Watchtower" by Hendrix, "Mr. Tamborine Man" by the Byrds, "Blowing In the Wind" by Peter, Paul and Mary)
And Aretha Franklin completely absorbed "R-E-S-P-E-C-T" from Otis Redding.
"Rock Myself To Sleep" is problematic, as the approach taken by the two bands make it two completley different songs

Johnny Cash's version of 'Hurt' by Nine inch nails
Jeff Buckleys version of 'Hallelujah' by Leonard Cohen
Aretha Franklin's version of 'Respect' by Otis Redding
Jose Gonzales version of 'Heartbeats' by The Knives
Nirvana - 'The Man Who Sold the World' by David Bowie
The White Stripes 'Jolene' by Dolly Parton
There are of course some appalling (truly apalling covers!)...

It's not the only one, but it's certainly one of the few. It's very good.
Also, I'd add that Earth Wind and Fire's cover of the Beatles "Into My Life" is actually better than the Beatles version.

Yes' cover version of "America" would certainly be described as more expansive. but as for better, its all in the ears of the listener.
The original version done by Simon and Garfunkle was originally a song with acoustic guitar and vocals. Yes adds thier typical flair with an ever widening source of sound.

I agree it is better thank the original version, yes. I also thought Nirvana's cover version of David Bowie's "Man who sold the world" was better than the original too. David Gray's version of Marc Almond's "Say hello, wave goodbye" was better too.

Of the top of my head, I like Maxwell's cover of This Woman's Work more than the Kate Bush one. I also like Linkin Park's Behind Blue Eyes better than The Who's.
