I think the GRE score and the GPA kind of balance out. If you get a Kaplan Cd-- they have different graphs after you take the practice test, that show you the bell curve for each field of study. I just remember that the math section for engineering was not a bell curve at all, it just went up and up.

Getting a Phd has little to do with a GRE score. You need to have either obtained a very good Bachelors degree or a good Masters. Then you need to have a thesis which is accepted as worthy of a research study and finally you need a supervisor who is prepared to put in the time and effort to supervise you. GRE is the least of your problems when going for a PhD. Many Universities will initially enrol you for a Master of Philosophy and then allow you to convert to the PhD program if your dissertation warrants it. In addition even when you have completed your Masters you may not be awarded a PhD. A panel will decide whether your work is up to the mark and if not you may be asked to improve it, failed altogether or only awarded a Masters. You should think hard before you embark on a PhD course it is not easy and it is not meant to be easy. I have a friend who was made to take 12 years before he got his PhD.
