Bring a pack of new born diapers........a pack of big thick maxi pads.......get pj's that are easy to take on and off......forget about those cute matching top and bottoms....you won't be wearing pants while you're in the hospital.....
and if you're planning to breastfeed you would easy access...
a going home outfit for the baby.........
and make sure your car seat is already installed way before your due date.....

I think those are the most important things.......

Pack a bag with some comfortable night clothes - if breastfeeding, something with easy access. Pack a book and some snacks for you and father of baby (labor can be long and unpredictable). Take a going home outfit for baby and a few backups. Also, take some slipper socks and a hairbrush and toothbrush and toothpaste. Pack a maternity outfit to go home in. You won't fit in regular clothes again right away. You shouldn't need diapers, wipes, maxi pads, formula because the hospital will provide them.

Here was my list:
Clothes to wear around the hospital (for walking before and after labor)= usually a robe, socks, sweat pants or gown. All sizes are for 9months preggo since you do not go back down for a while
Clothes to wear home- pants, shirt, socks, shoes, undies. All preggo sizes
2 outfits for baby- one larger than the other since no one knows what size baby will be. Outfits include weather clothes- socks, hat, shirt, pants, or dress for girl. Remember what the weather will be like outside so you can dress baby appropiately.
Pads for you (lots and lots)
Extra undies for you (for any accidents after the birth)
Hair accessories for you
brush
toiltries
Pillow
ETC- this covers anything personal (perfume, jewelry-not advised, and other)
Remember that you need to be as comfortable as necessary so bring what makes YOU comfortable. Don't bring too much money or jewelry because thefts still happen in hospitals.

Suggested ideas for Your Labor Bag

Tooth brushes for everyone and Tooth paste
Any reference book or pamphlet you might need (I prefer The Birth Partner.)
Pillows from home (Use colored cases to distinguish from your birth place's linens)
Music you would like (You may need to provide your own CD Player or Tape Player)
Camera with film and batteries
Camcorder with charged batteries and accessories
Signed copies of your birth plan
Water bottles for ice
Your own wash cloths, colored ones work better
Waterproof pads for the car ride
Any clothes of your own that you wish to wear
List of people to call after the baby is born (include childbirth educator)
Lip Balm
Massage tools (Oils, massagers, etc.)
Change of clothes for partner, including swim trunks for shower or pool
Baby Book for getting the foot prints done by the nurse when she does the paperwork
Focal Point (If you want one)
Socks for mom
Special foods or drinks
Suckers or hard candy
Snacks for labor support
Calling Card for Long Distance Calls

There's a few more sites with more ideas if you need some. But I found this list the best.

Loose, comfortable clothes - you'll still be really big when you leave.
Socks and slippers - hospital floors are gross.
Hair bands - you may be sweaty and sick of having your hair in your face before it's all over.
Nursing pads - even if you don't plan on nursing you'll be leaking.
Pads - you'll still be bleeding a lot when you leave.
Mints, gum, and lip balm - they don't let you eat or drink (only ice chips) and you'll eventually want something to help you with dry mouth and bad breath.
Toiletries - hairbrush, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo.
Contact list - to call everyone that will want to know you're in labor without hassle.
Baby name list - only if you don't already have one picked out.
Camera, film/storage device, batteries/charger.
Snacks - crackers, etc., goodies for dad...you can't eat but he can, and it will cut down on him leaving for food.
book - one for you and one for dad. You'll be there for a while.
change of clothes for dad - he may not get a chance to go home for a while
charger for your cell phone - if you have one
diaper bag and all of the diaper bag accessories

Dinner for those at home :)

Seriously you got good advice above, I would advise packing 2 bags, 1 for immediate needs and one for after/next day

If you are going to the hospital and than to labor and delivery than a room, why carry everything or risk loosing it.

Take what you need, leave the rest in the car. Your husband will welcome the fresh air to go get it when needed

That's up to you really. When I went into labor I didn't have time to pack becuause I was early. But my stuff was brought to me. There wasn't anything that I really needed any more then my phonebook to call family and freinds. You may also want to bring some slippers and pajamas you may feel a little bit more comfortable.

A nightgown of your own so you can put on after you have your baby. Socks because the ones they have fit funny. A robe!!! And bring your own underwear. Do realize they may become soiled because you bleed afterwards but you dont want to wear hospital panties! At least I didn't!
