The same applies to oil (fuel) where the US is still talking of barrels! For heavens sake!

The US is a benighted and backward-looking country still clinging to weights and measures derived by us Brits ( IMPERIAL measures) . These were perhaps relevant to everyday life 200 years ago ( or indeed still in some sectors of current US society) but when a far superior system ie METRIC comes along it's folly not to adopt it! Besides, being based on multiples of 10, ie fingers, it would easier for the average american to use.
Embrace the metre cousins - you have nothing to lose but your chains, or furlongs... rods, links?

Probably for the same reason the US still uses the US customary system of measurement. (You know feet, miles, gallons, and pounds) We know our own system and fear change. :)
