Rap is not music when they sample other people's music and sing? (speak in rhyme) in a monotone voice without any range to the vocals, which is what 90% of rap tends to sound like.

Rap isn't music because rap has next to no creativity. Look at Missy Elliot. She uses the same 3-second loop (if it can even go that far...) for a song and just throws words in there. Whereas most accomplished musicians uses chords, scales, and riffs to create actual music with musical notes, not beats. Anybody can make beats and say words along with it. It takes talent to make some music notes up and have it sound good and still sing words. The only exception off the top of my head right now is Eminem. His use of pianos and violins in some of his songs are pretty good. Remember, you can't spell "crap" without "rap."

I think people tend to think rap is not music because of the lack of singing or the use of sampling in the music. I think people should think about it as a form of entertainment that when rap first began it was a way of expressing emotion and told a story. Rap did not originate in one place. Back in the day in the mountains of Kentucky they would tell stories to song not only to tell the story but to remember it correctly. Then this moved to country, rock, and now rap. I think rap has just as any form of music degenerated in some ways. It can be considered derogatory, hateful, and racist. But if you choose to listen to it then who cares what other people think.

Because they don't play instruments, they sample other people's music. Most don't have much to say that isn't just self promoting or laced with so many swear words that I'd be embarrassed to listen to it with my grandma. And most people are more worried about thumping the bass so loud that you couldn't understand what they're saying anyhow.

Sadly, rap is a world centered around greed, vanity, lust, etc. Of course, like most things, there are exceptions. Once in a while someone actually takes the time to sing, has talent and something to say - and their peers ridicule them for it.

Because they don't like it and want to belittle it as a non-art form. Rap is technically a music genre and therefore a form of music. Rap got it's inspiration from many sources although some people credit the bluesy style of rock music from bands such as Aerosmith in the 70's who themselves were inspired by the blues which came from folk music, gospel, etc. and folk music derived from other styles such as....

The list goes on. Music is universal each genre has influenced and been influenced by another in a never ending cycle.

I'm actually quite picky as to what I listen to...the rap that I go around calling "Crap with the C flushed down the toliet" is for stuff like what P. Diddy does...I don't like Sampling. I only listen to a little rap due to the fact that most of what I come across is very negative, hateful, and hurts my ears.

Rap isn't music, there's music in the background, if that's what you mean, but it's not that great, rap can be ok sometimes, but there's no point in listening to something you don't understand at all. The kinda fast one's are ok, but there still not music. They're just saying words very quickly, if they put a little tune with it then it's alright.

People tend to get in ruts of "what they know".
For many, rap just seems like noise and talking. Those people have refused to view rap on its own terms. Good rap involves clever metaphor, pushing the envelope of slant rhyme and command of rhythm. Being someone who studies music, i think history will honor some of rap's stronger writers as the poets of our day.

im my opinion rap takes more business talent than musical talent. in rap u dont have 2 coordinate ur band ( guitar drums bass etc.) u just write ur lyrics ( if u do tht urself) and ur sound guys take over. and all u really have 2 do is sound good spittin out lyrics you dont even have to have a good singin voice.
rap is music but it takes less musical talent to make it. if tht makes any sense at all.
srry if i offended any1
