I don't like to take pills, hence the reason I am pregnant. I started off taking my prenatal vitamens but gradually forgot and eventually wasn't taking them. I am 24 weeks pregnant now and have had a healthy pregnancy. I was put in the hospital one time for dehydration, but I have been drinking plenty of water and milk since then. I know that people back in the day didn't have prenatal vitamens, so are me and my baby going to be fine?

I really strongly recccomend taking them. Don't worry that your baby will have some major birth defect as some here have said, but there are other reasons to take them. I can't remember to take pills- I don't know if this is what you mean by 'I don't like to take pills', but that's how it is for me. I just forget. That's the reason I got pregnant too- three times.

Tip- make them part of your daily routine. Find something you do every day- breakfast, brushing teeth, whatever- and put them where you can't help but see them when you do that. Unlike BC, it isn't important to take them at the same time every day, though it can help.

Do you ever get tired? Through all 3 pregnancies, I have found that if I remember my prenatals 3 days in a row, I have much more energy and get fatigued less often.

How are your teeth? You say you drink a lot of milk. I hate milk. During pregnancy, I made sure to get plenty of milk products- cheese, yogurt, ice cream- and forced myself to drink (chocolate) milk twice a day. I think the thing a pregnant woman needs most, so far as vitamins, is calcium. Many pregnant women's teeth suffer during pregnancy, since the baby is taking so much of your calcium for bones. Even with the amount of milk products I was forcing myself to get, and prenatals, my teeth have still suffered.

Are you getting plenty of vitamin c? I know that during my pregnancies, I would get more colds when I'd forget my vitamins for a week or more at a time.

I still keep mine around and take them if I remember, and if I have one of those days planned where I know I'm likely to miss meals, I make sure to take them that day. All 6 obstetricians I have had have said they reccomend them for any woman who is of childbearing age regardless of whether she is or plans to get pregnant.

To sum up, you don't have to take them. If you are very healthy, you will be fine. However, give it careful consideration, because they can be a great help. I suggest buying a bottle (over the counter, even if it's just the Wal-Mart brand), and keeping them around. Later on, when you start being tired more often, give it a try, for 3-5 days in a row and see if they help you any.

One other thing- after the baby is born, consider Nuvaring. No pills, much less remembering. Different birth control methods have different effects on different people due to individual body chemistry, so I know that some of the methods I've had trouble with might not give you difficulties and vice versa, but for me, the shot was very bad news- I was suicidally depressed on it. Nuvaring is the best thing I've found so far.

yes, you'll be fine. The vitamins are more imporant early in your pregnancy. I had a similar problem, except instead of not liking to take pills, I went through like 10 different types and they all made me sick. My Dr told me to try taking 2 flintstones vitamins a day (as it has all the same things in it) instead of prenatal vitamins and if that didn't work to just not worry about it b/c it wasn't as important late in my pregnancy. I ended up trying the flintstones and stopped altogether at around 28 week. I had a perfectly healthy 8lb 10oz baby boy. He'll be a year old in 2 weeks and is still very healthy! Never had any problems!

The most important thing is, as everyone here has already told you -- live and eat healthy. Make sure you are eating enough from each of the food groups, and that you're avoiding unhealthy habits -- smoking and drinking as you probably are already.

The biggest thing that doctors want you to get enough of is the Folic acid -- which the vitamin provides enough of. There have been hundreds of studies done that show taking/getting enough folic acid reduces all sorts of nasty birth defects that can occur.

So eat healthy -- and lots of leafy greens (among other things that are high in folic acid), and stay healthy and active and you'll be just fine.

I've had a hard time taking the vitamins also. They made me sick to my stomach, and every time I tried to take them I'd just throw them back up. My doctor told me to take Flintstones chewables, but those were worse than the regular vitamins!

Pretty much all the vitamins are for (besides giving your baby extra nutrients) is to give you back what your baby is taking from you. Your baby is taking a lot out of you (obviously living off of you) so, it's just to replenish what you are losing. You should be fine without them, as long as your eating a healthy diet. If you can though, it is good to take them, even if it's just once in a while.

Good luck, and congrats on the baby! :)

The baby will be fine. I have a 6 month old and I often forgot my vitamins. He's happy, healthy and beautiful.

HOWEVER -- when you begin to feel worn down it's because the baby is drawing your nutrients to grow. If you take the vitamins at least semi-regularly you'll notice you don't feel as worn out and run down. I did. They really helped me maintain a decent energy level as I got bigger.

Continue to eat right, get plenty of rest and drink water. You'll be OK.

You should be fine. I'm like you. I start off good and then forget more and more until I stop completely. I have 2 healthy kids. I'm lucky if I made it to 24 weeks of vitamins with either of them.

If you don't want to take vitamins.....you should AT LEAST take a folic acid supplement......

Vitamins are not harmful if you take 1 a day......and remember you are making this baby out of your own body....
so you do need the EXTRA nutrients and vitamins to make this baby.......

And you can't compare to mothers back in the day.....there is more research and studies done now......and all for the better.

I didn't take them. My doctors (I had two different doctors in two different locations) never advised me to. If you eat a healty diet and go to doctors visits it's okay. My son is healthy, I am healthy, and everything is fine. If you are at a great risk for something--take them but I really think they are just an unnecessary precaution.

Ask your doctor if there is any other supplement (maybe in a liquid or powder form) you can take. The most important thing is that you get enough folic acid. Some diet changes can help with that. Ask your doctor these things, not us!
