I am due to deliver this week, and have heard, and read all the helpful hints on helping the labor process begin. I just wanted to know if it is the actual semen that helps begin the contractions, or if it is the orgasm a women has during sexual peak which helps along the labor.

The semen. It has something in it that softens the cervix.

it's both. The act of having sex contracts the muscles. and there is a hormone (oxytoxine sp?) found in the semen which breaks down the tissues surrounding the baby. The same chemicals are released by nipple stimulation and when you orgasim, so you can try it yourself too. The theory is that the act of having sex will break your water ,and start contractions.
I have 4 children, and it never worked for me, but then all of mine were premies, so it might work for someone who is full term

It's not the semen or the orgasm, though the orgasm could help by stimulating those muscles. It's actually the stuff the semen is in. There's a hormone in it that stimulates your hormones or something.

The orgasm because when women have an orgasm your muscles contract. Semen has nothing to do with it.

its a combination of the physical activity of sex and the uterine contractions that orgasm brings on. Semen is not a contraction inducer-

The doctor told me that seman has a trace amount of potoson (sp) in it, the same drug the use to induce. He said to have sex and put your feet up after and it could help if you are ready. With my first child we tried it and after I feel asleep when I woke up I was covered in blood and then the contractions started right after. My daughter was born 16 hours later. Good luck

OK- apparently these good people above me haven't had many kids, because it is a combo of both. The activity of sex helps, but sperm is a natural labor inducer. That is why DR.s will tell you to use a condom during pregnancy. My DR. explained that to me, to help induce my labor when I was getting close to my due date.

I have heard it can be both. Definately orgasm though. I always had the worst contraction every time! Also nipple stimulation can start your labor.

Its the orgasm. Try scrubbing your kitchen floor on your hands & knees. I did that with both my kids the night before my due date and had them on my due date. Raspberry tea also helps, along with balsamic vinegar and fresh cilantro. All pretty gross, but the tea or cleaning isn't too bad.

The best exercise that you can do now to accelerate labor is walking, that'd help you also for your deliver to be easier and last lesser. Good luck.
