My friend is 18 but he got kicked out of his house. He is still in high school and has no past record of delinquence. His parents are divorced and he lived with his mom. His dad was paying the mom child support but now he is trying to claim the money since he is no longer living at the house. (mind that he was kicked out 1 week Before his 18th Birthday)

It depends on the state I would imagine and what the court had decided on the terms of the child support. A child is an adult at 18 and in many cases the child support checks are stopped. Unless the child is still in school and living at home. In some cases a person has to pay child support until the "child" is 23 years old and still in school.

But your friend would most likely not be able to get that money and the mother should not be receiving that money either. Your friend is an adult and needs to figure out what he is going to do around work or living with his father. If he lives with his father, the mother may have to pay his father for child support instead. He needs to contact his father and find out what the terms are of child support and to let him know that he was kicked out.

After the age of 18years, his father has no requirement to pay child support by law. IF the mother is taking it in then both of them are losing $$. Maybe the father could help a bit with $$ for a set period of time, if there is back child support due then he needs to go to child services to correct the records and to his father and have his father deposit it in a bank account for him. Is he working? Get a job immediately- one must live. My grandfather ran away at 16 because his Dad beat him with a bullwhip- life sucks, but he lied and joined the military and passed away as a four star general. GO TO SCHOOL- go on. One of lifes hardest things is knowing something is due to you and knowing you probably won't get it- yes, I'm owed 38,000.oo in a case. IF the mother is getting money I would suggest the Father stop sending it and write to child services too-your friend is over 18-Mom can't force things.

Well, if he waited until after he had turned 18 to try and collect anything then he screwed himself. He probably screwed himself anyways iof he got kicked out of the house. But of course you left the part out as to why he got kicked out. Which by the way will be taken into consideration. Sounds like he has had a bit of a rough life however that is no excuse. Besides, one week is not worth it. he would be wasting his time.

Guarians are only responsible for kids until they're 18..... hopefully he will have somewhere safe to stay.. (ie w/friend, or other family members) until he's 18 then he's on his own.

He can call some local adult shelters to see if they have room.

If he's still under 18 your local children's protective services can be contacted.

He has no right to the child support as far as I know.... it is for his caregiver to provide for him.

Even if he was kicked out honey that money is not technically his. It sucks, but there is nothing he can do. If his mom took care of him at all that month it is hers for keeping a roof over his head and all. Sorry

Unfortunately, at 18 he is considered an adult, even while still in high school. Child support ends at 18 also. Its his parents prerogative to not support him or allow him to live with them, although it sounds a little cold blooded to me, I would never have done that to my kids. It may be difficult, but he may have to get a job to support himself while he finishes school.

I don't think he can get any more financial support from the folks by law. I would suggest some sort of financial and housing aid and anything that may help him get on his feet.

The parents have every right to throw him out of their house.

Maybe he should have obeyed their rules.
