Hello,

When I turn on my heat in the house, I notice a stong smoky smell coming from the vents. This is the same smell that comes out when you have turned on the heat for the first time after being off all summer, however, it's not the first time I turned it on this season. What is that smell, is it dangerous, maybe hidden carbon monoxide, or something caught in the chimney. Thanks so much!

If your heat involves electric heat strips, when the heat is first used in the Fall the dust on the strips oxidizes and produces an odor such as you describe. As the heater is used the odor dissapates. If the odor persists consider having an A/C contractor clean your HVAC ducts.

Carbon monoxide is odorless, by the way. The chimney is probably not a part of the ducted HVAC system.

Clean your filter...think about it. The thing has been turned off all summer and the AC has been cranking just pulling in all the dirt and hair and well you guess that is available to it and all that junk is now sitting on the heating coils waiting to smoke up the place...

Carbon monoxide is odorless...that is why you need a detector.

It might be that you need to change the filter or have the unit cleaned out. we had the same problem and we took it out gave it a quick rinse and it was working fine; no smell after what so ever

Have you changed your air filter. If your filter is plugged your furnace will run to high limit(the temperature the manufaturer does not want it to go higher than)having the heat exchanger get that hot will make that same smell. If the filter is clean you may have a faulty limit. get a service call.
