As already advised - the British Embassy may be a good choice. If they can't directly help (which they probably won't be able to do) they would certainly help you to make phone contact with your credit card company (I presume you have a credit card) and, with their help explaining your difficulties, the company would probably be prepared to 'lend' the money on your card. Do you have any friends you could ask? How about your bank?- aagain the British Embassy would help you make contact and again help to explain your difficulties.
Otherwise try going to the airline and see if they can offer suggestions.

Why not try getting a job, to raise the airfare? If you go to the British Embassy you will have to repay them, once you get back here. I am sure you will be ok, if you get a job and make some friends, you will probably decide to stay in the states!! This same thing happened to my aunt, she has now been in America over 48 years!!
