We purchased our house a year ago and the previous owners got the furnace cleaned every year. I have forgotten about it until last night when we turned on the heat! Should I have the furnace cleaned now? Or wait until spring when we stop using it?

Miss Cassie,

Here's the scoop.

You should have your furnace cleaned every fall usually before heating season begins. Over the summer dust will usually settle onto the heat exchanger of the furnace, and when you turn your furnace on it will burn this dust and stink a little bit (kind of like something is burning). This smell is fine, I have never known a serviceman to remove the ductwork to clean the outside of the heat exchanger, so this smell will happen even if you have it cleaned.

If you do not have your furnace cleaned every year you are not in any danger of a fire. There is nothing in your furnace that will catch fire if it isn't cleaned. Cleaning is a good idea to keep your furnace running efficiently, and prevent problems from developing. Change your filter as needed (not every month) check out the filter if it looks clean don't waste money on a new one. I would suggest the pleated type filter, they are more money, but do a much better job at filtering your air, this will help the dust on the heat exchanger a little bit too.

I would say never go more than 2 years without a cleaning, and stay on top of your filter changes and you will be fine!

It should be cleaned every year and the filters changed. It can be a fire danger, depending on the kind of furnace. A yearly cleaning and new filters will lengthen the life of the furnace and it will run more efficiently. I would do it now, and again next Fall.

Have it cleaned now. You don't want all the dust and gunk floating in your air all winter.
