Humans are like rats or chickens... put too many of them in a too small of a confined space and they begin to kill one another.
Compare the people in a small town to a large bustling city. The townfolk are way friendlier, actually care what happens to their neighbours and will even hold conversations with a "stranger" on the street. In a city people are more "territorial", and some people actually have no idea who the neighbour beside them is.
Each year the population of this planet grows. Some people say there is room for more. I believe we have gone over our limit already... this is why humans behave the way they do.

I think people are getting more and more careless and rude as times go on. It's rather scary to think what life will be like when my children are grown. I am afraid for them.

I think a lot of people are feeling that there isn't any reason to have hope anymore, which would affect their feelings towards others.
