In addition to above response. That orange box would be holding something with 'Baking Soda' in it. And yes it will help alot to add some to the wash. My husband works in construction (when he works :-) and that is how I get the smell of diesel and welding material out of his clothes.

Definately alot of us hve used the same things to stop the smell, but you need to define the real cause of the problem. Most likely it would be due to bacteria either in the towels or in the machine itself. Try running an empty load with lots of soap and vinegar to get rid of the smell, then be sure to put the towels directly in the dryer after washing do NOT let them sit in the washer because germs and bacteria can thrive in a warm moist environment in this case between the tub of the washer and the outer casing.
we actually had to do this a couple of times before being certain that all was well. It also helps to use baking soda, and I believe there is a baking soda washing powder on the market. You don't want to just hide the odor, stop the cause and you won't have a problem. You also may need to take the outer cover off and clean any collected dirt out of it (a repair person or you can do it if you are handy) and reassemble it all clean. good luck!

Welllll, it could be several things:
you may need to wash them in Hotter water or not let them get moldy in the bathroom or remove them from the washer and place them in the dryer sooner and make sure they are completely dry before folding and putting them away. They clearly have gotten mildewed somewhere along the way; if they are white; then hot water and bleach will put an immediate end to the problem...according to the ads that oxyclean(generic works) stuff could help too or some febreze type of stuff...

Maybe your washing machine needs a good cleaning if you're doing everything else right.

Do an empty load with one gallon of white vinegar on the small load setting on the hot setting.

That should get rid of moldy things.

I have a batch of shirt myhusband wears - Carhartt shirts, that do the same thing. Dry they smell fine, but when the wash is done, and are wet, they smell awful.

I think once they turn sour, or get mildew, it is always present and we just smell it when wet. New towels??

Wash them in hot water to kill all the bacteria, then add good fabric softener like downy when rinsing, throw a dry sheet of fabric softener as well when you put them in the dryer it works! They smell good for a long time. When folding them, insert a sheet of fabric softener in between or try putting an unwrapped bar of soap in the linen closet to make everything smell clean!!!!

You need to neutralize the micro organisms that have built-up in the towels. Put a cup of white vinegar in with your wash load - this will kill those little stinkers!

Put 1 cup of white vinegar, in the rinse cycle, it will get all of the soap out of your towels, and will smell great. You won't get the smell of the vinegar when you are finished..

You leave your clothes in the washer too long or after you just them you just keep them wet. Take them out earlier or let them dry instead of throwing them in the laundry basket. . If that doesn't work buy some new towels.

probably beacuse they sat in the washer too long before going in the drier or maybe you need to have your washer cleaned.

Run a washer full of soap and bleach first...no clothes then run it again with vinegar and and a big box of baking soda...

before you wash your next batch of clothes that should help to freshen it up
