Because it's the right thing to do. Should we just let the Arabs exterminate them? We stopped Hitler in WWII, this is no different. Do you think we should just leave them to their own devices? Furthermore, they are part of the war on terrorism. They have been fighting it since their nations very beginning, and know a lot more about it than we do. They have been our allies through everything, and that's more than I can say for any other nation on earth.

I don't know much about relations between the USA and Israel but the fact of the matter is, there really is no problem with the USA supporting Israel even if it is a Jewish state. This is not an issue of religion, because it is basic Christian doctrine that being Christian, or Catholic, does not preclude you from supporting and helping ANY PERSON of ANY religious affiliation or state. The choice, therefore, it not in the religion, but in the politics.

Where do you think christianity came from??? Jesus Christ was a JEW!
Israel contains most of the places that christians find most holy. Israel, as a jewish state, is not intolerant to the christian faiths.
If Israel were to be taken over by radical islamists, christians would probaly loose access to those holy sites until such time as the islamists could finagle some cock and bull about how it is an islamic site, or how as a jewish or christian site, it was used to defile islam.
Also, don't forget that while many consider the USA to a "christian" nation, it is NOT. And we have a VERY large Jewish population that supports our backing of Israel.

History
The Jewish nation has been a very oppressed one. Those country's that have oppressed them have , for some reason, been dealt a very harsh blow through out the ages. Our good friends the Egyptians tried, and it got so bad that their water turned to blood. I will add, this is from EGYPTIAN records, I am purposely not quoting the Bible.
The enlightened people of Iraq (Babylon) decided to take them captive. This resulted in the fall of the Babylonian Empire. Look at them now.
Romans oppressed them- Romans are gone.
Ottomans oppressed them- Ottomans live in mud huts getting bombed by F-16's as we speak.
Germans- with the exception of the Mercedes-Benz, a flopping failure of a country. Still occupied by America 60 years later.
Middle Eastern Countries- all of them were crushed in 7 days of fighting in Israel.
So, with out talking about the Bible's warnings about messing with Israel, we have illustrated how every nation that has come against Israel has fallen and never recovered.
The USA, chooses to not be apart of that list. On top of that, as a Christian Nation, we have the same scriptures to base our lives off of that the Jewish Nation has. That is why we support our neighbors to the east. Besides, they let us keep nukes there rent free.

The USA is not a Christian based nation. It is a nation founded on the principle of religious tolerance, that expressly BANS the establishment of any religion in the First Amendment to the Constitution, while also guaranteeing the free exercise of any religion. As to why the US supports Israel, the answers range from moral to strategic reasons. Israel has always been a staunch ally of the US. Israel is the only democracy in the region. And Israel is very fervently supported by evangelical Christians for religious reasons.

Where do you find statutory or constitutional support for your statement that "the USA [is, or for that matter, ever was] a Christian based [whatever that means] nation"?
The USA supports whatever country it finds in its political and diplomatic interests to support at that particular time.
If you mean to ask why the USA doesn't put religion at the forefront of its interests, you may want to look at the numbers. There are 1.2 billiion Catholics; 1.4 billion Muslims; and the rest of the 6 billion in the world are spread around the rest, or none.
President George W. Bush and many or most other Evangelicals feel that the fate of Israel is central to their religion, and to the End Time, and to The Rapture.
Whether that has any relevance to foreign policy I kind of doubt. But you might want to follow the link.

Firstly, Jesus Christ was a Jew. Israelites are the chosen people of God. Our beliefs and teachings here in the U.S. have origins in the Jewish faith.
Secondly, if you go back in history, you will see that any other nation that went up against the nation of Israel failed miserably. Israel is protected by God.

The USA is not a christian based nation. It was founded on freedom of religion. The majority of citizens are Christian but it was founded on non-religious principles.
There are many reasons why the US protects Israel and I am not going to open that can of worms.
