I have aquired a lot of junk on my computer over the last 4 years and now it's so clogged up it runs extremely slow even on high speed cable internet and it constantly tells me the virtual memory is too low. How can I clean out my system myself without having to pay a ton of money to have a tech do it?

It's worth getting an expert to check your computer out at:

Register, go to the Hijack This Forum, read the instructions on how to post a log, give a brief description of your problem (like you've just typed) and post your log there. The guys in there are fantastic and trustworthy and will guide you through in getting rid of anything nasty from your computer. Good luck!

You can simply reinstall the OS without reformatting the drive. Be sure you have drivers -- particularly your high speed cable drivers -- before you do this, otherwise you might find yourself internet-less.

Because the programs aren't actually installed into the OS, you won't have the slowdown problem even though all of your stuff is still on the hard drive. Nearly all of your programs will continue to work fine.

You might find, though, that you use so few programs and data, you are best off setting aside a few documents and reformatting the whole drive.

Get a program like Allume "Clean Sweep" and knock out all of the files and programs that you are not using.
Defrag it when done. This puts the remaining files in line for easy access. If you have not done it in 4 years, it will be a long process, as there are tens of thousands of files.
Or you could get another hard drive, install the OS on it, and copy program by program what you need as you need it, because after 4 yrs there are just too many files to go through. If you have an empty bay in your computer, and an extra power and buss connector, you could install it yourself, or you can add a usb one outside. I have one on my laptop, to backup what I need. After 4 years, a new hard drive is not a bad idea, they do wear out.

Back up anything you want to save on a disk and reformat your hard drive. Make sure you have everything backed up. Make sure you have your original recovery disk too, or backup every single program on your computer or you will loose it all.
