Honestly, I think the best gift would be to keep in touch with him. Write to him on a regular basis, especially if he has shipped out. Send him pictures of family and friends that he can carry with him. A friend of mine use to send newspaper articles of local events to her husband so that he could keep up to date about things that were going on at home.

find out what music he really likes and misses, and add your favorite music or videos as well, load it all into an ipod nano and send it to him.
how about a camera that he can take pictures on and send the memory card back to you.
For less expensive...food is good, photo of yourself, a cozy non "army-issue" blanket, good books.

If he's active duty, baby wipes, mini packs of kleenex, any kind of candy that he might like. If he's not active duty, sorry but you're on your own.
