Do you think that the rate that technology is growing, has slowed in the past ten years and do you think we are losing a lot of great minds to video game playing, TV watching and a general lack of interest in the outside world as a whole?

bravo! you are so right. this leads into the epidemic of obesity. too much time is being wasted on "sitting" and waiting to be entertained. there is a lack of interest in being creative or kids going outside to play. when I was a youngster my parents insisted I go outside to play.

While I think too much TV and video game playing is a bad thing, especially for the younger generation. I do not see any decline in technology. In fact it appears to be advancing at an accelerated rate. The problem with TV and video games is that it is causing a marked decline in social skills and I would also say is one of the contributing factors, albeit not the only one, in the rise of violence in our society.

well, first the newest techs are growing very quickly.
did you know that due to quantam mechanics, the "transporter" is becoming a reality.
( I mean the one from startrek)
they are allready "beaming" atoms.

( we went from flight to landing on the moon in 70 years)

and,
1% of the population invents the new stuff anyway...
I do think that tv,computer, and the like are taking away peoples social skills, but there are the dreamers who want to make that thing that was on the sci-fi show.
remember when lasers were sci-fi?
and now you can buy a laser at wal-mart for $3.

I think the tech is so complicated now that if you don't have a deep interest and understanding, you don't get it.
I mean, would you sit and watch a tv show by stephan hawkings on tunneling? or other physics?
I wouldn't and I like that stuff.

No. I think video games create problems solving abilities in the users. They are highly addictive as is watching TV. I think the failure lies more in the elementary and high school levels who have worked cirriculum towards scoring on a test and not getting kids to think. Example is my kids type nearly twice as fast as I did at their age--the reason--instant messaging whereas I learned typing. This critical thinking comes out more at the college level nowaday. And people have always been disinterested in the outside world. Knowing about the outside world helps round the character and expand the horizons but it isn't the be all end all of learning.

The video game addicts of today are the fighter jet pilots of tomorrow......I have a 15-year-old and can tell you that she and her friends (very typical teens) are VERY interested, informed, and concerned about the world around them. We watch Lou Dobbs every night and have regular discussions about world events.

There are plenty of couch potatoes, but most of them are more influenced by their parent's habits (apathy or involvement) than anything else. If all a parent has ever done is stick their kid in front of a screen (be it TV, DVD, or 'puter), as a babysitter, well, then, you reap what you sow.

If, on the other hand, a parent does things like taking their kids to help dish out Thanksgiving dinner at a soup kitchen, or takes the kid(s) to work to see, first hand, that money doesn't somehow magically appear on the other side of an ATM but has to be earned, or has everyone in the family donate unwanted items to a thrift store or shelter, well, then, you're gonna end up with kids who are more socially conscious and recognize that they have a lot to be grateful for and that the world doesn't revolve around them.

It all comes back to, what is in my opinion, the number one problem we face today, and that is, lack of accountability.

If all you do is write out a check and send it off to a charity, and then pat yourself on the back for doing a good deed, then your kids will learn that it is "enough" to throw money at a problem. Kids learn what they see. If we want kids to grow up to be responsible and involved, then we, as adults/parents, have to set the standard.

Technology is slowing only because corporations have to figure out how to make a buck for their company out of every new development.

We DO have too many video games and time wasters available. It's time they introduced new sports and individual competitions to interest kids. The only new thing I've seen in the past ten years is pig wrestling.

I feel that technology is growing at a pace that we cannot keep up with and that is a bit worrisome. And yes, I do feel the lifestyle people have today is sedentary and unhealthy because it is devoted to video games, TV, internet and no real social interaction. Look at the weight of children, they are in crisis because they are overweight and have little social skills. I blame parents for making TV and the computer babysitters.

I don't think technology is slowing, I think what is new is being fully explored. Yes, there is too much screen worshipping but I also think some of the screen watching allows things to be seen & taught that a person wouldn't easily see (the discovery shows about other countries). No black & white answers.

I'm probably pretty old fashioned. I think there have been a lot of problems caused by our addition to the television, the computer & video games. ADD for one. All of these things can cause severe sensory overload.
Let's get outside, breath fresh air & take a walk.

Definately. Did you know that 66% of Americans over the age of 20 are overweight? Maybe spending too much time in front of the TV, computer, etc.
