My heart would go out to him/her just as it would with anyone that was crying. It would mean that person was hurting. Homeless people, are homeless for a reason. Sometimes mental illness, sometimes something so tramatic in their lives that they can't deal with society anymore. They are still people.

It would be a heart wrenching situation for sure. But, one that comes with a bit of a grain of salt. Although it makes me sad and I can't imagine being down and out like that-there are plenty of agencies, shelters, etc.. that specialize in giving those who truly deserve and actually want to get back on the right track! I can't feel too much sympathy if a person is not willing to take that extra initiative to improve their overall lifestyle. We need to learn to utilize the accessible outlets provided to us, as opposed to taking advantage of them. I do believe as well, that what goes around comes around-therefore I would definitely offer help, perhaps bus/cab fare to a nearby shelter, etc...

I would feel sorry for the homeless person. Perhaps I will help him/her out by giving some money, perhaps something that is good and edible. Maybe talk to him/her. Offer a hug?

my husband and i used to live in a small city, there was a homeless man that lived by the river and when i went on beer runs for myself I'd pick him up a bottle of vodka....sometimes I'd hang around and drink with him....he cried when we moved, i cried with him....
2 years later he passed out on the train tracks and was killed
I'd go check on him as often as i could.....about 2 times a month, he would never take real help, only some money, food, or booze.... i don't know how many times i tried to take him to the hospital to dry out, but he'd tell me he preferred dieing drunk by the river
he looked about 80, but he told me he was in his 50's he couldn't remember.
me and a city cop were the only ones at his funeral....i bought his casket and the cop his headstone, and we drank vodka to his memory
the cop was also guilty of giving him alcohol.
turns out he was 63 at death.....with no living family at all. No military record, no work record...who knows where he came from..
sad, isn't it?

I would be sad for him/her, but honestly, I've encountered enough homeless that are mentally unstable that I would not feel comfortable approaching them at all. Unstable + upset = potential for unprovoked violence, and while I do know self-defense, the first rule they always teach you is to stay out of the danger in the first place. =(

Put them up in a hotel room for the night and give them some money for food.

I would go up to the person and ask if they needed anything and if they were O.K.. Give them a word of encouragement and maybe buy them a lunch. And Pray with them, that God would proctect them being out there all alone.
