In an alfred Hitchcock film or short film a guy was in prison trying to escape. He agreed with the gravedigger to dig him out after he heard a bell of respect ringing the previous night. This bell of respect signified the death of inmates.
He heard the bell climbed into coffin and when awaking he decided to have a look at who in the prison had died. To his absolute horror, the one who died was the gravedigger.
Bad Luck eh!
Can you tell me the name of the film?

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a film, but a story on "Alfred Hitchcock Presents", an anthology show from the late 50s-early 60s.

No sorry but I do know exactly which film you're talking about and it was a female prisoner wasn't it? I'm almost sure of that.
It wasn't a cinema film it was in a tv series of his short stories.
Edit: I've just been checking out some of the links on here because I'm intrigued too. If the original was made in the 60s then the version I've seen is definitely a different one from the 80s and it did star a woman as the prisoner and the coffin maker was an old black man. In the version I saw the lady offered to pay for the coffin makers eye operation (because he was going blind) if he would help her. Still don't know the name of it but it definitely was Hitchcock.

It was definitely one of the Alfred Hitchcock Presents TV shows - and I believe it was a lady who was trying to escape from prison. The list of all the episodes can be found here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055657/episodes

The title for the original episode from "The Alfred Hitchcock Hour" is "Final Escape".

There's a remake with a woman as the lead character:

i presumed Sparky could say "The Birds". I advise it may discern does no longer it ? there is Psycho, although that immediately includes ideas... Funnily adequate, i've got not watched it. i've got often questioned if it develop into as frightening as human beings say..... ...the female Vanishes has continually been a regularly occurring of mine between the previous black-and-white British comedies...
