Many cars get covered with a protection agent to stop rust. As you are driving it will be the faint smell of the new car goodness burning away. Kinda like when you buy a new book and it has that new book smell...but for cars of course. It should go away after a bit more driving. If you have an issues, then drive it back to them but make sure you have done a few miles so you don't seem so silly driving back and saying there is a problem with it.

Actually, unless the smell is really strong -- it is actually normal. There are areas of the engine that are painted and as the engine heats up it does slightly burn this coat of paint to some degree. The other issue is that the fluids that have been added to top off things like the washer fluids or transmission fluids may have spilled over onto some part of the engine and that can smell as that burns off as well.

It should go away quickly -- after a trip or two.

Just as a precaution, if it still is doing this in a day or two, you should have it checked by a mechanic while it is still covered under warranty or if you are experiencing any kind of performance trouble. That would be a sign of another problem.

Enjoy your new car.

I'm envious.

I've had 2 brand new cars and I can tell you it's NOT normal. The engine is brand new so there shouldn't be any kind of oil or gas residue on the engine. It should be very clean. I suggest you take it to another mechanic, because most car dealerships won't be completely honest about whats wrong. I had one that was not running right and the dealership kept making excuses. The problems got worse, and by the time I found out it was too late. In most states you only get 30 days to return a car, so act fast.

it could be totally normal. A lot of engine parts have a lubricant based coating from the factory. Also, as mentioned, the brakes will smell bad for a bit. Unless you see smoke coming from something, I would let it go to about 100 miles, and see if it does not get better. Also, maybe check to make sure no belts are rubbing on anything.

its not unusual for a car to have that many miles on it brand new, it was driven out of the factory to a parking lot and goodness knows how many times moved in the car lot etc. Our new car did have a funny smell that the dealership mechanic said was normal. That smell came from our brakes.

Just continue to drive it. If something happens to it then it's under warranty. Did the dealer tell you this ? Maybe even get a second opinion from another Scion dealer.

More likely to be a factory mistake, most likely a bit of paint or oil around the exhaust, if it doesn't burn off after a couple of hundred miles take it back and insist they find the fault.

Burning smell, not good. Take it back to the dealer and have it looked at. If the dealer is giving you the run around, take it to another mechanic for a second opinion.

if there is no smoke and it does not smell like oil burning then it is normal most of the smell is most likely coming from your exhaust and it should start to fad away the more you drive it if it does not then take it back to the dealer or where you bought it

well that is very true. as long as everything works fine and the engine light is not on. is temp gauge reading normal. OK then probably oil on brakes. take it down a long strait empty road and stomp on the gas. then on the brakes.
