Bigger = more expense to heat, more clearing up, more decorating etc.

But more room to move about, more places to put things, more room, more comfortable? (would you feel more comfortable?)

Too right. I live in a 1 bedroom first floor flat, no central heating, 10ft X 15ft garden that isn't private. Thin walls, small rooms. Tiny kitchen that only 12 ft X 6ft. Its all so tiny and cramped and not enough space to put everything.

Would love a bigger detached house with a private garden.

No. My little house is the perfect size for me. Any bigger & I wouldn't be able to vacuum it or mow the lawn without collapsing! It couldn't be more comfortable! I know people who get a bigger house (with 4 bedrooms) & then have a room almost empty! They don't even have enough stuff to fill it. It's just the "prestige" of a bigger house & rooms they don't need. I have just enough space for my stuff in 3 bedroom home.

We live in a small cottage, about 1100 sq ft. 2 BR, 1BA. We don't have kids, but 1 BR is his office and my office is the size of a closet. A slightly bigger house would be nice so we could have a guest room. And a slightly bigger yard so the dog had more room and we could plant a garden in the actual ground instead of wine barrels.

But our rent is good, so we're not moving anytime soon.

I feel some of these "hotel" sized homes are just ridiculous in a time when we should be aware of heating costs. I prefer my 1400sq. foot home, it's perfect, not too small, or too large. My mortgage is low and I am able to pay it even if I fall on hard times. Too many people live way above their means and that is why this country is in bad shape with debt at an all time high and foreclosures on homes that people have ARM's on and cannot pay their mortgage. Sad, very sad.

I moved from a one bed flat to a 3 bed house, lovely for a family but I can never find anything...I spend all day up and down the flippin stairs (its a town house so 2 flights of stairs) looking for things that arent in their proper place. Oh and the garden is wonderful but the novelty of gardening wears thin very quickley. Its lovely to have the space but, as someone has already mentioned, the more space you have the more rubbbish you will find to fill it.

Only if I had enough money to pay someone to clean it.

And, you forgot one of the biggest problems - when you have extra space, relatives come to visit and stay with you. Yikes!

Ok, so I need a cleaning person AND a guest house. Then I'd go for the bigger place.

YES! We are just starting our family and have a second child on the way. We are really beginning to feel the pinch for space. It's bye bye Study and hello baby room again for the second time.

as long as you can afford to furnish a big house, all the better but most of the time you probably only use about 50% of the house on a daily basis. So I'd say it's mostly for show.

Yes, we are currently trying to get into a bigger better home. We are renting a old piece of crap house right now and the heat bill is outrageous here! It has no insulation whatsoever.
I hope we get the loan!
