I am considering going back to school and waiting tables. I was recently laid off and unable to find a job in my field. I worked in restaurants and bars years ago but I am not sure how much I can expect to earn nowadays.

I am considering a casual dining chain with famous babyback ribs or a local but busy BBQ shack.

Any info is much appreciated. I am in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

You can determine this for yourself. There are scads of restaurants looking for experienced waitstaff so you might be able to pick your own "poison" so to speak.

The manager should be able to tell you the average amount of a meal ticket in their establishment. He should also be able to tell you how many times, on average, the tables turn during the shift you are applying for and how many tables he assigns to each waiter. So, ticket amount x table turns x number of tables x 15% should equal your pay! A $40 tab, 3 turns a night, 8 tables would yield $144.

In TX the standard wage for servers is 2.13 and hour. How much you make beyond that is up to you and you're skill level as a server. If you're fast, friendly and at least somewhat intelligent you'll make more than someone who isnt so friendly or so fast! I averaged about 2000 a month as a server and 3000 a month as a bartender, but I've been in the restaurant business for 6 years. Some of the girls new to the business averages about 1500 a month serving.

I'm in the Dallas/Fort Worth area too.

I personally am not waitstaff (I'm only 17 and you have to be 18.) But I work as a host and togo at a Chili's.

Servers at chili's usually make about $40-50 on mornings Monday-Friday. $60-80 on nights Sunday-Thursday. $50-70 Saturday and Sunday mornings. $60-100 Saturday and Friday nights.

Thats just an estimate though.

there is not any 'set coverage'. it rather is as much as the eating place and wait team as to how tips are taken care of. I worked at an Italian eating place that in basic terms served dinner, so the only wait team worked the entire night. tips have been shared (2-3 waiters for twenty-four tables) by all. Sharing works properly in a small eating place the place the wait team help one yet another out with serving, busing, and so on.

It all depends on YOUR personality and your ability to remember people. If you make less than $300 a night in Dallas/Fort Worth area then you shouldn't be doing that kind of work. People are willing to pay good money for FANTASTIC service. Know the menu. Know how to cook. Know how to serve....Keep the table clean, anticipate the persons every need.

I used to clear about $36/hr between wage and tips. And that was in Iowa! I can only assume since you know the biz, you've got the class to get good tips. It can be a fun job if you like talking to people. :)

Minimum wage for servers is $2.13 an hour. If you are lucky you can sometimes find a place that pays more, but that is rare.
