I agree, but not ALL Americans are like that.

My experience is that most Americans don't know and don't care what is going on outside of America. They are surely not very good in geography, of course some Americans are, but I've been to the States a lot and when they ask me where I'm from and I say Norway, they normally don't know where it is or even heard of it.

I agree with the rest of what you say as well. Like when the Hurricane hit New Orleans, a lot of peoples died, and it was terrible, but at the same time, there was a earthquake in Pakistan that killed 10 times as many peoples as in the USA. You still talk about the Hurricane and how horrible it was and pitty yourself, but what about Pakistan or other counties in Asia that are hit by natural catastrophes very often?

A lot of Americans should learn to open their eyes to the world a little bit. I'm saying this for you're own good. It's pretty interesting with geography and to know what is going on in the world :)

Why are Americans are called melodramatic (you really should get to know a word before you attempt to use it) and "so full of themselves" just for being Americans? No, we don't think we are "always the best" in every context, but we have as much right to be proud of our country as anyone else. There's good and bad here, like everywhere, but there's more good than bad.

And if you cannot feel sorrow and pity for a people shocked by the events of 9/11/01, you are a pretty calloused sort.

Yes, people die elsewhere, and Americans are very generous in their help on various causes, as you can see if you look at statistics on global charities and foundations. In fact, I would venture to say Americans are more generous than just about any other country. But the people dying in Africa, to cite your example, are people who have problems it will take some time to solve, and they are dying one by one. We are all doing what we can to help them, but it's the AIDS epidemic that seems most critical in Africa and frankly, much of the problem is with public education efforts. We hear tales of people who have the most horribly distorted ideas of what causes and can cure AIDS, and that is more illiteracy and ignorance than a medical problem directly. We are doing what we can to help. What are you doing?

I agree with some of the other answers; I think a lot of people around the world, not just Americans, are like this. As I see it, in terms of individual vanity, that can be explained by the fact that the United States was founded upon the value of the individual, etc., etc. In terms of nationalism, well, nationalism isn't all that uncommon, and there isn't necessarily anything wrong with it.

Why are u so full of your self that u think u can judge ALL Americans throwing us all into one group. It's the same crap like saying why are ALL woman so mean, why are ALL men such jerks. ALL ALL ALL
I'm not full of myself. NOT everyone is the same u know. Unlike the President who pretends to care I acturaly have seen the homeless people in the United States. I'm from a rural farm area so seeing all those homeless people puts a shock in me. The city folk in Chicago did'n't look at them just went about there busy lives. So u tell me We ALL Americans are uncaring?! Well go eat something disgusting. I DO care. I DO wish I could fix this planet. Even in my teenager years I saw the homeless the sadness in world on tv. SO you can't lump us ALL together like that. Don't judge just b/c u see some crap in television. There are caring American's out there and I'm one of them!

Because we are literally the best country, the best nation on the globe. We have a higher standard of living, we have freedom, we send aid each and every time any other country is in trouble.

When is the last time American needed help from anyone else.

What other country has people crossing the border illegally just to gain entry.

Facts are facts buddy and America rules the world! If you don't like it leave and if you are not an American you simply are jealous!

Why pick on Americans? The same things can be said about any place in the world. You're stereotyping. A lot of Americans know that people in Africa are dying every day. We're not deaf and blind. Take your anti-Americanism somewhere else.

It's not that Americans are so full of themselves or unaware of the unfortuante events outside of our country. Poverity and starvation are everywhere, and there is so much we can do to help them.
The bottom line is...it's competition, meaning that there must be groups more vicotrious or better off than the other.
Sorry if I am not making any sense.

You are commiting your own "sins" by using a blanket statement to describe us. We are very aware of things going on in the world. We protest and take political actions. Our government does not always reflect our belief systems as individuals. I have met people from other countries and I listen to their side of the story, and I have learned not to allow a country's government to control how I view all of the people who are from there.
