Try calling around 9:30-10:00 am.
But realize that in today's world, work is at a premium. People with Master's Degrees are working at Wal-Mart, and happy to have a job. The competition is fierce.
Persistance and determination do pay off, though. Don't give up; keep calling untill you talk to someone, and try not to take "no" for an answer!

Don't get too frustrated. Keep calling them, but not every day. That's over the limit. Call every couple weeks and then when they are looking for someone, you will be a name they remember. The best way to get in contact within a company is to know somebody in that company. It doesn't matter what their role is at all. It just matters that they can point you in the right direction. Get permission to use their name and tell the manager that you got the number from that person you know. The best way to find a job is to make a call. They are your first contacts and if one of them gives you another name, you now have another contact. Getting a job is about networking in the industry you want to be in. Just start with one person and go from there. Be patient, it will happen.

You should go and apply in person. This shows persistence. Make sure you are dressed nicely.....not sloppy, and that you havbe a good attitude. Smile, maintain eye contact, and be personable. I was in retail management for 12 years. If someone simply called, or came in and dropped off an application without asking to speak with me.....they were not the first ones I would call back.

Be ready for an on the spot interview, also. You may not get one, but at times, the Manager is ready to grant one, so be ready in case he/she is.

Go to the customer service desk, and ask for the manager. At the stores you spoke of, if the manager is not in, then an Assistant Manager will be, and a lot of times, the Manager gives him/her just as much power in the hiring decision, so be just as respectful when speaking to that person also.....

Good luck!!!

Its easy to ignore people on the phone.

Go down there. SIt in front of the manager's office. You have nothing better to do anyways. Bring a book, and some food. Make it clear that you are not leaving until the manager comes. Be polite. Leave without a struggle if they call the police.

The best way not to get the job is to keep calling!

I think that you walk in. Do not ask for a job. Just try to get to know the people there. Take your time. Know the organisation. When you ask for a job, just let it seem to be accidental. People will help you.

Let me know when you get one. Count-down starts as from today 11th Oct 2006. Good Luck.

You may ask if there is a HR, Human Resources Rep, to speak to at the grocery store. The manager may have other things to do, so they deligate for personnel or HR to do the hiring. Also, are they union? You may ask how to contact the union rep at the store. This may help you get a foot in the door.

Go in person and ask for the manager. Then ask to fill out a job application. You probably won't get anywhere calling.

I never relied on monster.com or any postings to get a job. I went in person in a suit and asked to be interviewed on the spot or to be set up with an interview. I had a job in 2 weeks! You have to sell yourself and go outside the norm to be competitive. Work on your talk trac and do some research on the company in advance.

calling, or handing out your CV aint gonna land you a job. When you are applyin for a job indirectly like calling them or sending a CV without knowing whether they have positions or not, its WHO you know in business that counts.

I suggest you wanna join a job agency and they'll sort something out for you...

best of luck
