I'm wearing kind of coffee colored pants and a dark purple golf shirt today. Is this fashion forward, or do I just not match?

Since brown's a sort of neutral colour, it's fine. If the purple were bright, then it wouldn't work. But because your colours, a coffee brown and dark purple are relatively dark colours, they do match.
If you ever have doubt about colours when you look in the mirror, don't wear it. Trust your fashion instincts. Everyone, in their hearts, know what looks good on them when they look in the mirror.

If they are fairly dusky colours they will go. What I mean is, a garish purple shirt and brown trousers will look terrible but what you are wearing sounds pretty good!

Those two colors look good together! They are both neutrals and can blend in with things. They are also VERY fall, which is good, because we are in fall!

Brown goes with everything like black. The combination is dark but sounds very nice

No, they don't go together. If you had to wear it as a uniform in school or work, then you wouldn't have a choice. Sometimes when you are unsure, it is best to opt out of wearing it at all. Unless of course, you don't care what others think and do your own thing. Be creative!
