That probably depends on your country that you wish to teach in, or if in the USA, what state you wish to teach in. In America, most states require a secondary education degree along with your english courses, and then you have to take a certifying test. However, if you aren't in America, then this may not be the proper protocol. Check with the people at your college; they should be able to tell you. If you are in America, check with your state's department of education.

Well they're kind of the same but not . To be an english teacher you'll major in english at an university. At some universities you're able to combine b.a and b. ed degrees, so you'll select not only english courses but course for what division or panel you want to teach in, elementary(and that's divided into preK-grade 3, grades 4-6 (junior levels) 7&8 (intermediate) or high school. For teachers in Ontario who teach hs they need to have at least two teachable subjects in the undergraduate degrees so you might do english and history or english and esl or english and drama whatever. That therefore complicates your undergraduate degree as to course choice so you have to plan ahead.

Most universities whether in Canada or the US operate with pretty much the same kinds of criteria.

Don't become an English teacher. They get no respect. They get no cooperation. They get no resources.

Even though every single book in school is written in English, and even though every single thing they turn in for any kind of homework is expected to be in English, and even though everything they encounter, from the internet to the supermarket to job applications to training manuals and so on are in English, they don't get it.

They just don't "see the point," and they dislike how they have to use their brains, and in most cases, they can't use their brains, the way that is required to deal with language.

If they could see that language is the software that we use to run our programs in life, and that English is the software we use in this country [and others], they might see that he who reads and writes English the best runs his life the best. But they don't see this.

Each state has different qualifications for their teachers to meet and exceed. There will be a lot of writing and literature classes to take, but you need to research the standards in the area you plan to teach in.
