Diffusion is the movement of a solute substance from an area of high concentration to that of low concentration through a given solvent e.g diffusion of gases in air, ink in water, oxygen in and out of red blood cells in our body. it depends primarily on the difference in concentration ( concentration gradient). Other factors include temperature and what is called the surface area to volume ratio of the surface. Higher temperature, higher concentration gradient and larger surface area to volume ratio tend to speed up diffusion.

In some rare circumstances, you can also influence this by an external force, such as a magnetic or electric field, or gravity.

I believe it would still be considered "diffusion" in those cases.

Mechanical agitation will certainly increase the mixing rate, but that is NOT diffusion.

Heat....the kinetic energy causes the molecules to move faster. Here's a demo I use to illustrate that..
Take a glass of cold water and a glass of hot water. Put a drop of food coloring into each at the same time. The Hot one diffuses much faster.
