what makes this light come on?

Many things Go to autozone Advance or o reilly and they will check sensors for FREE no kidding.

Anything regarding emissions (this includes leaving the gas cap off), engine management (miss fire, O2 sensors, ignition control) and a few others. It's best have the car scanned to find out exactly what triggered the light.

Computer has detected a component failure or a condition that may damage your engine. If the light is amber you should be cautious and have a tech check it out. If its red you should turn off the vehicle and have it towed in.

your engine needs serviced. no i found it happens when the battery is low.
