During and after the Civil War 1861–1876
In small New England town, proabably based on Massachusetts, since that was where Louisa May Alcott was living when she wrote it.

They live in Massachusetts. Jo goes to New York for a short time in the book where she meets the German professor. Their father is off fighting in the Civil War. The war ends about half way through the book.

its set during the civil war, the family lives in the north (new york I think, its been awhile since I read it)
