Assuming that internally it is ook, can I hook the laptop to a regular monitor to salvage the info I have saved?

Yes, if the screen is the only thing busted. You just need to connect to your laptop's external video port. Then just copy stuff to a network or whatever. The screen is unfortunately the most expensive part of a laptop, and the most fragile- so replacing it might be less appealing than replacing the entire machine. LCD screens can't be repaired.

In the worst case, your hard drive doesn't work. Anything less severe than that, and you could remove the hard drive and put it into an external enclosure so it's accessible from another computer (via usb cable)

Yes, most laptops have a standard VGA output on the back or side. Connect this to a external monitor and you should be able to use the laptop as normal.

If the monitor doesn't show anything when you first connect it, look at the F keys on your keyboard. Sometimes you have to push FUNCTION & F4 or such to get it to switch from the internal to external display. Other times you'll just need to restart so the laptop powers up with the display already connected.

HTH!

Sure you can, there is usually a toggle setting through some of the function keys depending on the model to redirect the output to the external monitor once you connect to it you want to make sure that it is only redirecting to the new monitor and not displaying at the same time to the broken monitor since there may be shorts in the circuitry.

Yes, if your laptop does not have a video port use a USB to VGA converter. They work well and are very inexpensive.

if the laptop has a video out plug, yes you can. if it does not, you can still remove the hard drive, connect it (using an adapter - about $10 at compusa) to a desktop machine as a slave drive, and pull off what you need/want.
