Fantasizing is a means of goal setting. If you have no goals you have no hope. No hope and you know where you at. Humans can't survive without hope and needs goals to feel a sense of accomplishment.
This is why the wife might not fantasize because she is just in it for pure pleasure in the moment. Maybe men tend to fantasize more for this reason.
