Wouldn't you think the more humanitarian thing to do would be adopt a child who has had to endure longer in poverty? Like, what's wrong with a 7 or 8 year old?

to clairify a bit...although I'm loving the answers...why do they only adopt BABIES. 3rd world or not (although, I love the point was brought up that they wouldn't be caught dead adopting a *gasp* american orphan!!) why don't they adopt a 6 or 7 yr old who has had to live thru so much more poverty.

I think they do it because it adds to their publicity. You notice when Angelina first adopted Maddox, it was all people talked about. It makes them look like this great humanitarian to adopt children who have been suffering through poverty, but the truth is, there are lots of children in America that suffer though heartaches too, and you are right; they need loving families too.

I would say that it is because it is easier to adopt children from countries other than America, but when you have as much money as Angelina Jolie and Madonna, anything is possible, so that's not really an excuse on their part.

So in short... it's all for publicity and because, sad as it is, it's the trend right now. And I totally agree with what somebody else said... it's also because their children will look exotic as they get older.

Another thing that I just considered... maybe they want to adopt children that are definitely not their race so that people will just be able to look at them and KNOW that they adopted a baby.

The adoption laws are easier and quicker in 3rd world countries than in the US.

If a celebrity were to adopt an American child, CNN's Nancy Grace will spend the next 2 years explaining adoption law, termination of parental rights, child in need of assistance, etc. These proceedings would be public (unless a judge decided otherwise) and paperwork would be available to sites like smokinggun.com and others. I would think such advice would be in the public service, but Nancy Grace (as a former prosecutor) would care only about murder and pedophile cases rather than domestic law.

In 3rd world country, there are no such issues. Plus, the celebrity can advertise their video, movie or other performance to that country's residents.

This is a very thought-provoking question.

Although I myself have never been through the process, I have had one friend who did try to adopt overseas, and had to stop the process when she found out how hugely expensive it was going to be. Obviously celebrities have a lot more money at their disposal.

I don't think these people summon the media for their adoption-related trips. These celebrities cannot even blow their noses without someone photographing it.

I don't think ALL celebrities adopt only babies. Didn't Mia Farrow adopt a whole lot of older kids?

Maybe 3rd world governments are also at fault, for making it more difficult to adopt older kids?

maybe celebs adopt mostly from 3rd world countries is because the rate of children in 3rd world countries being orphaned dwarfs the amount here in the US. Many are young children who's parents are sick or dead and are basically left to care for themselves at very young ages, basically from being babies and toddlers. NO FOSTER CARE, NOTHING, most of all of these babies are not able to be in orphanages. Children here in the states even if awaitng adoption are cared and provided for. Children in foster care in the US get welfare, starting at about $1200 to $1400 a month. What do kids in 3rd world countries get?

I don't think it's a problem that's specific to celebrities. A lot of people who adopt prefer babies - they don't want to miss out on the early years, and older children who have been in the care system for a while may have issues attached to that. A baby has no memory of its biological parents, either, making it easier to bond.
Not that I agree with it, it's a big problem in the adoption system.

If they adopted a child from here in the U.S., they would have "parents" of the child crawling out from the wood work saying that was there baby, just to get publicity and/or money from the celebrity!

I think it's easier to get kids from another country. But, most people want babies not 7 or 8 year old.

I am sure plenty more people do it, it is just the celebs thta make headlines for it. Becuase the 3rd world country babies are in so much more desperate need than the babies in the USA.

Actualky, you are wrong. Many celebrities adopted older chikdren.

Many times they onlty adopt babies due to there ARE NO OLDER CHILDREN in orphanages due to the children don't live to reach 7 or 8.

I don't know why 3rd world countries. Maybe because they know that they were born blessed with looks which gave them money and they want to help somebody else who wasn't as lucky as they were.
In general I think they adopt because the women don't want stretch marks.
