My computer can burn DVDs, but I don't know how to get the material off of the tape and onto the computer in order to do this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Get a video capture card, which allows you to run video cables from your VCR to the PC. The ATI TV Wonder series and Hauppage WinTV series work great.

Here's an example:

There are two ways to do that:
1- Buy video capture card
2- Buy a DVD recorder

1-a Video capture internal is a PCI device, which you need to open your pc and plug it in on any available PCI slot
1-b External video capture connects to your pc by USB , it costs a little more.I personally prefer PCI since I wont have an extra device on my desk. You also need a software to convert your recorded files to a DVD file.Video capture card records in avi or mpeg, these files might not burn using your DVD burner.
Video capture card can also record TV shows
2-b DVD recorder can be hooked up to a VCR and record whatever plays on the VCR or TV.In order to play in your pc you must finalize the DVD.

1-get this device or similar: http://www.amazon.com/USB-Video-Adapter/dp/B00081FDJ4

2- while recording you can choose to record as DVD VOB file , if not then record the VHS first then convert the video file yo DVD VOB file by using software like AutoGK or VirtualDubMod (google them)

3- use Nero (from Ahead software) to burn the vob and ifo files to DVD

You need some type of "video capture" device. They make PCI cards, external USB devices, etc that do this.
